Used to set the teeth of hand saws by fitting the appropriate notch over every other tooth. Then pressing down on the handle to set 'bend' the tooth. The process is then repeated on every other alternative tooth fron the other side of the saw. The method very much relies on the skill of the operator, so some sets do come with a brass gauge.
William Marples was one of several ‘Marples’ in Sheffield manufacturing joiners tools in the 1840s. Know for their brass inlaid rosewood & ebony braces, boxwood spokeshaves, beech planes, gauges and squares. The company is in family hands and still based in Sheffield.
