This luxurious, imposing, hand made, talking point chess set in The Queen's Beast design is a great alternative to the traditional Staunton style of chess set. This large, well modelled set has hand painted accents and is perfect as a center piece for a large game table, its simply too impressive to be packed away after each game!

A large set with the tallest figure, the king, standing at 6.5" (16.5cm) with a base of 2" (5cm), while the shortest, the pawn, stands at 4" (10cm) with a base of 1.5" (3.5cm). The whole set (all 32 pieces) weighs in at approx 4.5KG.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no board with this set. The chess set is shown on our 3 1/4" (80mm) board, in taupe and black, with the Square solid Oak edge. Our recommendation would be a 2.75" (70mm) squared board.

The Queen’s Beasts chess set was designed for Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee in 1977 and is based on the ten legendary beasts that guarded the Queen's coronation at Westminster Abbey 1953. These ten heraldic statues represent Queen Elizabeth II’s rich genealogy.

Inspired by The Kings Beasts of Henry VIII, The Queen’s Beasts were commissioned to celebrate the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Each beast comes with its own symbolism, and historic tale of adoption.

Meet the beasts that represent the Queen's lineage:

King – The Lion of England
Queen – The Unicorn of Scotland
Light Bishop – The White Lion of Mortimer
Dark Bishop – The Black Bull of Clarence
Light Knight – The White Horse of Hanover
Dark Knight – The Yale of Beaufort
Light Rook – The Griffin of Edward III
Dark Rook – The Falcon of the Plantagenets
Light Pawn – The White Greyhound of Richmond
Dark Pawn – The Red Dragon of Wales

The set is cast in a hard and durable stone casting powder, giving each piece beautiful detail and definition. The hand colouring and finishing, using a method passed down through the family, ensures durablity and quality; futher enhancing the details. Each piece is completed with a felt base ensuring that your board does not become scratched.

Although this set is beautifully decorative, it is very durable and is intended to be used and enjoyed as much as displayed.

The colours for these pieces are aged ivory, with jade accents for the light and dark oak, with dark green accents for the dark.

Each piece will be individually wrapped and packed in a sturdy cardboard box ensuring the best protection possible. Wherever possible we will use recycled packing to reduce our environmental impact, so please don't be surprised if your chess set arrives in a pre-loved Amazon or cat food box!
